At the end of 2016, our coffee importers, Falcon Specialty, launched a project in the Copan region of Honduras, in collaboration with a small co-op – Aruco – where they supplied training, technical support and expertise. The project was focused on producing high quality micro-lots at a centralised mill, giving small producers access to speciality markets and quality price premiums. 25 small producers, with farms ranging in size between 1 and 5 hectares, were supported in the production of these micro-lots.
Norma Aracely Orellanar owns the farm La Arada, in the El Hicozal area of Corquin, Copan. Norma has been managing both her farm and her mother’s for a number of years now. She has been gradually regenerating plants and planting new varieties including Lempira and Colombia. The majority of the 2 hectares of land is planted with Red and Yellow Cattura, which has great yield and quality at this altitude. The farm has a unique micro-climate, which has ensured that the diurnal temperature fluctuation is still large and perfect for producing complex coffees.
We love this coffee and the project. So much so, that we bought all of Norma’s 2017 crop!
