Story
Finca Oconor is a 67-hectare estate founded in 1992 and owned by Isacio Javier Albir, who inherited the land more than three decades ago. Following the civil conflict of the 1980s, the property was restored in 1994 with extensive re-planting of forest and fruit species, and 10.9 hectares are now set aside as a protected reserve for biodiversity. Situated on the Honduran border within a broader forest-protection zone, the farm employs over 180 people during harvest and roughly 25 workers the rest of the year, and it aims to serve as a touchstone for high-quality, sustainable coffee production in northern Nicaragua. Ripe cherries for washed lots are floated with up-cycled water, dry-pulped and rested for 36 hours before a final wash and transfer in polypropylene bags to Cafetos de Segovia; the farm also produces natural, natural-anaerobic, semi-washed and other experimental styles.
Cafetos de Segovia itself was established in 2015 by sisters Ana and Martha Albir Sotomayor as the third generation of the Albir family’s coffee enterprise. From its mill at Km 231 on the Ocotal–Jalapa highway in Mozonte, Nueva Segovia, the company exports about 6 000 quintals of green coffee each year (approximately 272 160 kg). It maintains eight permanent staff and more than forty seasonal workers—nineteen of them women—and, under HACCP certification from Nicaragua’s IPSA, provides member farms with technical support, quality-improvement training and pre-harvest financing before dry-milling, storing and exporting finished lots in Ecotact bags and jute sacks that meet ICO standards.
